K R Jurgens – Craftsman, Painter and Decorator
A word from Kurt Jurgens:
“I started my painting and decorating business in 1992. I did my apprenticeship in Whanganui and did our block courses in Wellington.
When I finished my apprenticeship I decided to move to Wellington. After being a foreman for a big painting company then working for a small operator, I decided to go out on my own. I felt I had something to offer on repainting Wellington homes. I was – and still am – passionate about restoring older character homes and believe in doing a quality job.
As most of my work was in the Western suburbs, I set up and bought in Karori. At the time most of my work was in Karori, before the internet, most of my work was through word of mouth or advertising in the local paper or the Yellow Pages. In one street in Karori, I painted 7 houses in the same street, directly opposite and next to each other. Three of them I have repainted twice with the same owners and one with the new owner!
On an architect’s home, he wanted the woodwork oiled in an organic oil wax. I loved this product concept, it smelt of oranges. I ended up going direct to the manufacturer in Germany and import the full range of organic paints & product. Now I mainly use the Osmo oil wax to restore timber, which allows the timber to breath.
Three of my five brothers have also worked for me, although for the past two years, I have worked on my own.
I offer a personal service from start to finish. I have already invested in the best tools to deliver a quality finish. Even in my twenties, when no one else was using vacuum cleaner connected to sanders, I had this safey item when I first went into business in 1992.
I paint new houses and repaint existing houses for people who a high quality paint job that will last and look good for years to come.
